Council tax benefit backdating regulations

It is not possible to backdate a claim any further than these periods.

In order for a request for backdating to be considered there must be what is called 'good cause' and the council must be satisfied with the reasons you have given for not claiming benefit / reduction at the appropriate time.

Telephone: 03 Email: [email protected] Please quote your benefit claim reference in all correspondence – your claim reference is either an 8 digit number starting with 900, or a 5 digit number.

Some examples of when you may have "good cause" are: Your claim will be considered by a Benefits Officer.

The date your claim will start depends on how and when you claim HB or CTS.

For HB and CTS we normally start your claim from the Monday after you first made contact with us or the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), but only if you return a properly completed claim form within one month of us issuing it.

It is therefore very important that you contact as soon as you want to claim.

Get your claim form or letter to us as soon as possible because it affects the date your benefit claim will start from.
